Title: High Schools in the United States - Part A: Counselors
High school systems are quite different between mainland China and the United States. For high schools in the United States, students have relative high level of freedom of choosing their path in academics after fulfilling state requirements. And the college application process is much more complicated and time consuming. Teachers in specific subject areas are not responsible for helping students to navigate the maze of course selections at high school and the college application process. There are licensed educators in each high school who are specialized in helping students to achieve their full potential both academically and socially. They are the high school counselors. Each handles 200-250 students from grade 9 to 12. They are the gatekeepers for each student, and a great asset for students and parents to utilize. It is crucially important for any parent to have a constructive working relationship with his/her child's counselor.

Dr. Chin Chu, who has been teaching chemistry in a local public high school for seven years, will hold a general discussion forum focusing on the role of high school counselors and how parents can best utilize this resource.
